Celebrating Children in Australia

Danielle LawsonNDIS

We celebrated United Nations’ Universal Children’s Day in November, which was a fun day with an important message. In 2017, the theme was #KidsTakeOver! Children from around the world were invited by UNICEF to take over key roles in entertainment, business and politics to campaign for children’s rights. It was a day for kids…by kids!

The date marked the anniversary of the UN General Assembly adopting the Declaration on the Rights of the Child (1954), as well as the Convention on the Rights of the Child being ratified (1989). The United Nations has proclaimed that all children – defined as those Under 18 – are entitled to special care and assistance, plus the right to grow up in a protected environment.

The Conventions on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world and was ratified by the Australian Government in 1990; meaning that Australia has a duty to ensure that all children in this country enjoy the rights set out in the treaty, which include:

The right of all children to survival and development
Respect of the best interests of the child as a primary consideration
The right of all children to express their views freely on all matters affecting them
The right of all children to enjoy all of the rights of the CRC without discrimination of any kind

The fundamental purpose of Universal Children’s Day every year is to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide and to improve children’s welfare.

Zest Care have been supporting Australian children for over 16 years. Our specialist In-Home Child Care plans have helped thousands of families across NSW, and our dedicated team of Educarers are skilled in bringing the best out of their charges.

Educarers are carefully matched with the unique needs and goals of each family. No one approach is the same, as it’s important to us that each child and family has input into their care and development plan.

Let’s continue to celebrate the rights of children everywhere in 2018 and keep working towards making every child in the world feel safe and protected.
