Empowering Independence with the NDIS

Danielle Lawson NDIS

Gaining more independence is often a fundamental goal for people living with a disability.

“Independent Living” is itself an established philosophy in the disability sector – a worldwide movement of people with a disability who work towards self-determination, self-respect and equal opportunities.

In Australia, we have the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) to support people in achieving their goals. Launched in 2016, it is now widely available across the country.

The guiding principle of the NDIS is to place the individual at the centre of the decision-making process. As an NDIS Participant, you will have control over setting your goals and what Supports you choose.

Your NDIS Plan is the foundation of your relationship with the scheme.  It will be regularly reviewed and is an opportunity to continually track your  goals.

How Does the NDIS Support Independent Living?

NDIS-Funded Supports include:

Assistance with Self Care: Such as Support Workers for tasks around the home and any personal care needs.

Improved Daily Living Skills: This might include assistance with planning,  decision-making and budgeting. It also covers learning skills for everyday life, such as cooking, shopping and getting around on transport.

Access to Community, Social & Recreational Activities: NDIS-funded Supports also provide assistance to engage in the community and build relationships. Having your own network is a fundamental part of being independent.

Whatever your individual goals, know that the Supports are available to make them a reality.
