We love sharing inspiring stories. Amongst the devastation caused by the recent bushfires, we thought we would share our uplifting story of support and care.
Our story centres around Jennifer, one of our clients supported by three of our fantastic support workers – Charmaine, Kim and Jane. All three share the responsibility of helping Jennifer with her daily routines at home. Jennifer recently found herself impacted by the Currowan Bush Fire which started west of Nowra and quickly became dangerous, requiring the evacuation of local residents from Cambewarra.
Jennifer’s home was one of the homes threatened by the Currowan fire. Taking in the unfolding drama from her driveway, Jennifer watched as emergency service vehicles dashed about tending to properties and evacuating people.
At 5 pm the decision was made to evacuate Jennifer to the local sports centre. Jennifer’s sons, along with emergency services, moved Jennifer to the Shoalhaven Indoor Sports Centre in Bomaderry, where locals were also seeking shelter. While basic food and shelter requirements were taken care of, Jennifer ended up spending the night in her wheelchair.
The next morning, Jane and Charmaine supported her by bringing food including; cheese, biscuits, porridge and drinks. It’s a testament to their character and resilience that they continued supporting Jennifer in this difficult time.
The good news is Jane’s home didn’t get damaged and she made it back home safe and sound.
