60 Seconds With A Family Support Worker: Emily

Zest Care In-Home Child Care

Our Vulnerable Children’s Program works with families in their time of need. Emily Hulands is one of our fantastic Family Support Workers who always knows what to do in a crisis, so we decided to learn a little more about her and what keeps her going with such incredible work.

How long have you worked at Zest?

I’ve worked with Zest since August 2018.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

I get out of bed in the morning because there are families who need our support and children who are in vulnerable situations. They deserve to be cared for, valued and heard.

What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?

My biggest achievement to date is receiving the Family Support Worker Runner Up award for the Vulnerable Children’s Program last year!

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day where I’m working a shift includes packing my bag and choosing my outfit the night before – making sure I have everything I need the morning of, then arriving 15 minutes early so I can reread the confirmation and prepare for the situation I’m about to walk into. After work, I self-care by going for a run, then having dinner with my hubby, talking about our day and watching Netflix. Also, I’ll do a face mask!

What three words would you use to describe your role?

Challenging, rewarding, unique.

What do you like most about your job?

I love being able to go into the homes and being so hands-on with the kids – forming the relationships and working alongside the parents and carers to reach their goals.

What is your motto or personal mantra?

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.

What’s your favourite blog?

It’s not a blog, per se, but I do read a lot of BuzzFeed articles!

Given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?

Hm, I’d love to be one of my cats… They sleep like 20 hours a day and have everything provided for them. Plus, they get unlimited cuddles and attention!

What’s your favourite line from a film?

“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return” – Moulin Rouge

What is your favourite thing about working at Zest?

I love the flexibility and ever-changing nature of the work – you never get bored because it’s different week to week – no family or shift is ever the same!
